I saw this article in the NY Times today, about the impact mosquito nets can have on the fight against malaria.? By their numbers, 3000 people a day die from malaria.

3k.? Wow.

I might have to talk to the wife about giving some.

This related article had me laughing.? Fishnets.? That’s pretty funny.

What struck me about these articles is that they really have hit on something:? $10 isn’t that much, and to a lot of people, asking them for $10 is about the same as asking them for a quarter.? Actually, with the declining dollar, soon asking someone for $100 will be about the same as asking them for a quarter, which is pretty sad.

I’ve run into this a bunch these last couple of years, making chili and bringing it to the office.? Sometimes, I’ve put out an extra bowl and a sign, asking people to leave cash that I could take to the Chaplain at Landstuhl, for use with the Wounded Warrior program in helping care for the soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines brought there from the battlefields.? My $20 or $30 pot of chili would net $100, easily.

Oh, and do the nets work?? Yes.? I have had one in my field gear for years.? Sometimes, I’ve had fancy systems rigged to suspend the net over where I slept, and sometimes it was jerry-rigged.? But it works — it really does.
